My Transformative Journey: From Student to Leader at Ekiti State University
My six-year academic journey pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Political Science at Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, was a profound experience that went far beyond the classroom. From my admission in 2018 to the triumphant graduation ceremony on March 27, 2024, every milestone was a stepping stone in a journey of self-discovery, leadership development, and academic excellence. My time at EKSU was a crucible that forged not just a graduate, but a confident, service-oriented leader ready to make a meaningful impact.
2018: The Genesis of an Academic Pursuit
On August 14, 2018, I embarked on this life-altering journey by gaining admission to EKSU's esteemed Political Science program. The initial transition into university life was both exhilarating and challenging. As a naturally reserved and quiet student, I found myself navigating a complex new environment. Yet, my determination to succeed fueled my resolve. This foundational year introduced me to the core tenets of political science. I delved into fundamental courses like political theory, comparative politics, international relations, and Nigerian government and politics. These subjects provided the essential framework for understanding the intricate mechanisms of governance, the dynamics of political decision-making, and the far-reaching impact of public policies on the lives of citizens.
2019: Cultivating Confidence and Academic Focus
By my second year, I had successfully found my rhythm, and my academic footing grew stronger. I began to see that the study of political science was not merely about theoretical politics but was deeply intertwined with human behavior, effective leadership, and the design of societal systems. It was during this period that a specific passion began to emerge: administrative and governance studies. Courses focused on public administration, bureaucratic structures, and policy implementation captured my full attention. These academic insights would later become invaluable, not only for my scholarly work but also for my professional endeavors. This stage was pivotal in building the confidence that would serve me in future leadership roles.
2020–2021: Stepping into Leadership as a Course Representative
My diligence and reliability earned me a reputation among my peers and lecturers, leading to my first significant leadership role. In my third year, my level coordinator, Dr. Olaitan Feyisara, who was also the lecturer for my administrative courses, personally elected me as the Course Representative. This was a turning point. In this capacity, I served as the vital link between my fellow students and the lecturers, a role that demanded impeccable communication and organizational skills. My responsibilities included coordinating between lecturers and students, organizing course materials, managing assignment deadlines, and representing student concerns to resolve academic challenges. This experience was instrumental in teaching me how to communicate professionally and how to lead by example through service. It was a powerful lesson in balancing academic demands with the responsibilities of leadership, significantly boosting my self-assurance.
2022–2023: Fieldwork and Group Leadership Excellence
In my fourth year, I was once again entrusted with a leadership position, this time as a Group Leader for our practical fieldwork assignment. While other groups pursued various ministries, I led my team on a strategic visit to the Federal Ministry of Finance in Ekiti State. This was undoubtedly one of the most enriching experiences of my academic career. My group and I engaged in formal meetings with high-ranking directors and staff, where we posed insightful questions about staff welfare, administrative practices, and the multifaceted challenges of governance. We conducted thorough inspections of offices and work environments, gaining a first-hand understanding of the Ministry's operations. The warm reception and encouraging advice we received from the professionals were truly inspiring.
Following this immersive experience, I took charge of compiling and supervising our comprehensive field report. The effort paid off handsomely—our report was recognized as the best among all the groups and we were invited to present our findings. The crowning moment came when the then Head of Department, Professor Ola Abegunde, personally commended my leadership skills. That moment, filled with pride and validation, remains one of the most cherished memories of my time at EKSU.
2023: The Apex of Research and Leadership
My final year at EKSU was the culmination of everything I had learned, bringing together leadership, research, and practical application. This was the year I embarked on my most significant academic project: my final year research study. Titled
The National Gender Policy and Female Participation in Local Governance in Ado-Ekiti Local Council, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria.
My research was a deep dive into a topic I was passionate about.
Guided by the principles of Feminist Theory, I examined the effectiveness of Nigeria's national gender policy in promoting gender equality and increasing female political participation at the local government level. My study highlighted the critical role that policy plays in shaping social outcomes, particularly in empowering women in leadership roles. Through this project, I not only honed my skills in structured research and documentation but also gained a deeper understanding of the real-world challenges facing governance and gender equality in Nigeria. This academic endeavor was the perfect capstone to my journey, reflecting my growth from a student of theory to a researcher capable of contributing meaningful insights to critical societal debates.
2024: A Triumphant Graduation
My academic journey reached its pinnacle on March 27, 2024, when I officially graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. The graduation ceremony was not just a formal event; it was the symbolic conclusion of six years of unwavering resilience, dedicated leadership, profound academic growth, and personal transformation. It was a celebration of every challenge overcome and every milestone achieved.
