National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

My National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) journey was one of growth, service, and self-discovery. I camped in Plateau State, but afterward, I relocated to Ibadan, Oyo State, where I was posted to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

On resumption, I was initially placed in the Administration and Supply Department, where I gained firsthand exposure to administrative processes. During this period, I developed vital skills in:

  1. Drafting and filing official documents
  2. Organizing records and managing departmental correspondence
  3. Assisting in staff coordination and workflow management
  4. Learning government administrative structures and reporting lines
  5. My dedication, brilliance, and efficiency did not go unnoticed. Because of this, I was reassigned to the Inspectorate Department, a role that came with greater responsibilities.

In the Inspectorate, I didn’t work like a regular corps member or intern—I worked like a full staff. I became known as “Mr. Solution,” because colleagues constantly relied on me to provide answers to various technical and administrative challenges. From troubleshooting computer-related issues to simplifying reporting processes, I ensured that tasks were done effectively and on time.

Beyond technical support, my time there strengthened my soft skills:

  1. Time Management: I was often the earliest to resume at the Ministry, sometimes before any staff arrived.
  2. Team Collaboration: I built strong relationships with staff, who treated me as one of their own.
  3. Problem-Solving: I learned how to handle multiple responsibilities under pressure while delivering quality results.
  4. Leadership by Example: My commitment inspired colleagues and other corps members around me.

One of the most touching moments of my service year came on the day of my Passing Out Parade (POP). My boss, who had become more than just a supervisor but also a mentor and guide, broke down in tears as she bid me farewell. That moment confirmed to me that my presence in the Ministry had truly made an impact—not just professionally but personally.

Looking back, my NYSC year was not just about serving the nation but also about refining my administrative and organizational skills, building resilience, and proving to myself that I could add tangible value in any workplace I find myself.
