Nigerian Red Cross Volunteer – NYSC Orientation Camp (Plateau State)

During my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation in Plateau State, I had an unforgettable encounter that shaped my service year. On the very first day, after completing my documentation and collecting my NYSC uniform and kits, I noticed a man in a Red Cross jacket and cap, accompanied by two supporting officers, observing the parade ground.

Immediately, I felt an urge to join them. Perhaps it was the spirit of my earlier Community Health Volunteerism, or simply my nature to always want to help. Without hesitation, I approached them and, to my surprise, they welcomed me warmly. They asked me to change into my NYSC kits and return for proper registration. That very moment, I became the first corps member in camp to join the Nigerian Red Cross team.

From then on, my camp experience was deeply tied to service and care. I was issued the Red Cross bib and began attending daily trainings in first aid, casualty management, and emergency response. I supported during parades, sports matches, and hall programs, assisting in cases of fainting, fatigue, and minor injuries. I became so effective at handling cases that my hostel mates fondly called me “Doctor.” Beyond the field, I also helped fellow corps members relieve stress from parades and matches by massaging tired legs and feet. Inspired by my commitment, more corps members including those from my platoon joined the Red Cross during camp.

At the end of camp, I was proudly awarded a Certificate of Participation by the Nigerian Red Cross, a recognition of my service, dedication, and compassion.

This experience reaffirmed my belief that helping people is not just something I do, it is part of who I am.
